Slurry Pump Material Selection Guide: Choosing Between Wear and Corrosion Resistance

How to Choose the Right Material for Your Application?

In the slurry pump industry, selecting the right material is a balance between Wear Resistance and Corrosion Resistance. The most common materials are categorized into metals, rubbers, and ceramics:

1. Metal Alloys / Hard Metal:
The most widely used metal is A05 (High Chrome Alloy). It is the go-to choice for mining and coal washing because of its excellent hardness. However, for acidic or highly corrosive environments, specialty alloys like A49, Cr30, and Duplex Stainless Steel (304/316) are required.

2. Rubber Materials:
Flexibility and Resilience R55 (Natural Rubber) is the industry standard for handling slurries with fine particles and no sharp edges. For chemical applications, specialty rubbers like EPDM or Hypalon are used due to their superior resistance to strong acids and alkalis (PH 0-3 or 12-14).

3. Resin (Polyurethane):
Polyurethane (PU) offers a lifespan 3-5 times longer than rubber in specific abrasive applications, providing a perfect balance of toughness and durability.

4. Ceramics (Silicon Carbide):
For extreme conditions, Silicon Carbide Ceramics provide the ultimate defense against both severe abrasion and chemical attack.

How to Select Materials Based on pH and Abrasion?

  • Abrasive with mild PH: Choose A05 or A07 (Common in Iron/Gold mines).

  • Fine particles, no sharp edges: Choose R55 Rubber.

  • Power plant Desulfurization (FGD): Choose A49 or Cr30.

  • Strong Acid / High Temp: Choose EPDM or Hypalon.
